THE FRAUD MATRIX

Wire Fraud & Business Email Compromise

Criminals hack or impersonate email accounts to trick businesses and individuals into wiring money to the wrong accounts. This is now one of the most common and costly frauds affecting small and medium businesses.

  1. Spoof

An email impersonates a vendor, executive, or client asking to change payee details.

  2. Urgency

A tight deadline and 'don't share this externally' rush the payment.

  3. Redirect

The wire or payment goes to a controlled account instead of the real vendor.

  4. Mule

Funds are quickly moved or cashed out through mule accounts.

  5. Detect

The real vendor follows up, and the business discovers the diversion.
